We are pleased to conclude our fall series on the Arab Spring with a presentation on” The Arab Spring in North Africa” by Dr. Hamoud Salhi, Associate Professor in the Political Science Department at California State University Dominguez Hills.  He will be discussing the evolution of the Arab Spring in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, as well as commenting on the situation in Algeria and Morocco.  A native of Algeria, Dr. Salhi is a recognized expert on the Middle East who has written numerous articles and appeared on various panels both in the United States and the Middle East.

In addition to teaching political science courses, Dr. Salhi is the Director of the University’s Negotiations, Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding program.  A frequent guest on KPFK radio,

Dr. Salhi was recently featured in a documentary on prominent Algerian Americans titled “Success Stories from the U.S.”, which was produced by Algerian National Television and the U.S. State Department. He is also actively involved in promoting better understanding among Muslims, Christians and Jews in Southern California. 

A question and answer period will follow the presentation, which is free and open to the public.  Donations will be gratefully accepted to help us continue such programs.

As with our previous November programs, we will be joined by a group that sponsors two schools for Afghan refugee girls. They will display merchandise from Afghanistan and the region, including clothing, shawls and jewelry, which are given as gifts for donations to the schools.  Information and photos about the schools will also be displayed.  Currently over 600 girls are enrolled. with  $55 covering  the expenses for a full school year for one girl. This will be a great opportunity to do your holiday shopping while contributing to a very worthy cause. Donations are also welcome.

Because of the great interest shown in Islam during our September program, which received front-page coverage in the Ventura County Star, we are pleased to continue or series on the Arab Spring with the program “The Role of Islam in the Arab Spring." It will be held at the Thousand Oaks Library, 1401 East Janss Road in Thousand Oaks on Thursday, October 27^th from 7 to 8:30 PM.

Our guest speaker will be Dr. Amir Hussain, Professor of Theological Studies at Loyola Marymount University, the Jesuit University in Los Angeles.  He is a prominent scholar who teaches courses on world religions, and specializes in the study of Islam.  His many achievements include being the editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Religion, the premier scholarly journal for the study of religion 

On the same evening the CVUUF Community Forum is presenting a program on the “American Awakening – From Wall Street Protests to a Main Street Economy," where Dr. David Korten will be the guest speaker.  That program is being held at 3327 Old Conejo Road in Newbury Park at 7:30 PM.  We felt that their program was of sufficient enough importance to co-sponsor it and that is why you may have received flyers from us for both programs.

It is unfortunate that both programs occur on the same evening.  However, the only date that Dr. Hussain and the Thousand Oaks Library were available was October 27^th and we felt that we could have no better speaker on this important and timely topic. Further information about the program was posted on Thursday, Oct. 27 on this blog. Our September program “The Women of the Arab Spring” attracted considerable attention and was the subject of a front-page story in the VC Star.  During the program many questions arose about Islam and Sharia law.   For example, it was noted that despite the fears created by some groups about Sharia law spreading to the American heartland, Sharia law is the law of the land in only two of the 100 countries with Muslim majorities.

We are pleased to continue our discussion on Islam in the second program of our three-part series on the Middle East; titled “The Role of Islam in the Arab Spring”   We are honored to have as our guest speaker Dr. Amir Hussain, Professor of Theological Studies at Loyola Marymount University , the Jesuit University in Los Angeles.  Dr. Hussain teaches courses on world religions, and specializes in the study of Islam. He is the editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Religion, the premier scholarly journal for the study of religion.  He is also the editor for the third edition of World Religions: Western Traditions, a textbook published by Oxford University Press and is on the editorial boards of four scholarly journals. Since 2005, he has written over 25 book chapters or scholarly articles about Islam and Muslims.

Dr. Hussain, who was chosen by a vote of LMU students as the Professor of the Year in 2008 and 2009, will sketch the history of Islam in the Middle East , and then discuss contemporary developments. His talk will introduce the various Islamic political groups in the region (such as the Muslim Brotherhood), and he will discuss some of the events leading up to the Arab Spring, such as the elections in Algeria in the 1990s.
