speaking about
GUATEMALA: An American Perspective
Wednesday, May 29, 2013
Thousand Oaks Library, 1401 E. Janss Road
7:00 P.M- 8:30 P.M.
Guatemala is located in Central America and is populated by
over 13 million people. After its
independence from Spain in 1821, it was ruled by a succession of dictators
until 1944 when a coup led to a civilian, democratically elected
government. In 1954, the CIA led the
overthrow of this government. From
1960-1996 Guatemala became caught up in bloody civil wars and genocides as did
other countries in Central America.
Since the mid 1990's Guatemala has become a representative democracy.
Stephen Stratton is
head of Collections and Technical Services at the John Spoor Broome
Library, Cal State University Channel Islands, where he
leads the library forward into the future of digital books and journals. Mr. Stratton will talk about his experiences
in Guatemala working with two Non Governmental Organizations focusing on
libraries, literacy and education.
