Syrian Conflict and the Road to Peace - Hussam Ayloush

GLOBAL EXCHANGE

“Syrian Conflict and the Road to Peace”
A presentation by Hussam Ayloush
And Our Annual Afghan Girls Schools Bazaar
Wednesday, November 28, 2012
Thousand Oaks Library, 1401 E. Janss Road
7:00 P.M- 8:30 P.M.

Syria has become the bloodiest uprising since the Arab Spring swept through the Middle East.  While Syrian families and children face rampant violence at the hands of the Assad regime, the country has emerged as a dividing point in the international community that has failed thus far to contribute to an effective solution.  What are the roots of the conflict in Syria?  Do Syrian people have a real chance at peace and democracy?  What can the international community do?

Global Exchange is pleased to host our speaker, Hussam Ayloush, who has served as Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Greater -Los Angeles Chapter, since 1997.  Mr. Ayloush earned his B.S. in Aerospace Engineering at the University of Texas and his M.B.A. at California State University, Fullerton.

Ayloush has appeared on local, national and international media such as CNN, MSNBC, Fox, Al-Jazeera, PBS, BBC and others. He has written for and been interviewed by such leading news sources as The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, USA Today, The Chicago Tribune, and the Christian Science Monitor.

There will be a question and answer period followed by an opportunity to shop for beautiful South Asian items to support two Afghan Refugee Girls Schools in Pakistan.  Bring your Christmas and Chanukah gift lists.

This program is free and open to the public.  Contributions will be gratefully accepted.

“Islamophobia” can be defined as irrational fear of Muslims that leads to bigotry against their religion or those perceived to be Muslims (e.g.Sikhs).  Global Exchange, Ventura County Supporters, is pleased to sponsor this talk by Salam Al-Marayati, the Executive Director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council.  This presentation will explore some of the root causes of this phenomenon in the United States, and consider how this can be understood in a nation whose very existence is based upon the First Amendment’s Freedoms of Speech and Religion.
Mr. Al-Marayati’s articles and interviews have appeared in such prominent newspapers as The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The Christian Science Monitor, The Chicago Tribune, The San Francisco Chronicle and USA Today.
