Global Exchange, Ventura County Supporters, are pleased to present a talk by Maryam Qudrat, Ph.D., Professor at California State University Long Beach and a Fellow at UC Irvine’s Center for Ethics and Morality.  Dr. Qudrat holds in PhD in philosophy from the University of  Southern California.  In 2003, she authored a book entitled Torn Between Two Cultures:  An Afghan-American Woman Speaks Out.  She has traveled extensively in the region and has made numerous appearances on media such as CNN, TIME Magazine and The Los Angeles Times. 
As our troops depart this vital South Asian country after America’s longest war, what should Americans know about what we are leaving behind?  What is the current status of basic education, higher education, women’s affairs and public health?  And what should we expect about the future relationship between Afghanistan and the United States?
Local Board Members of two elementary schools for Afghan Refugee Girls will also be on hand to display Afghan jewelry, shawls and other  South Asian items, available with donations to the schools in refugee camps in northwest Pakistan.
Please plan to join us for an informative evening and an opportunity to do some holiday shopping.

Global Exchange, Ventura County Supporters, are pleased to present a talk by Lily Karam and Lulu Emery who will discuss the ever growing number of refugees in the Middle East.  The program will conduct an overview of refugees in Lebanon, Iraq, the Palestinian territories and, lastly, Syria where a two year civil war is creating large numbers of desperate displaced persons.  There will also be a discussion of the work done by volunteers to bring injured children to Southern California for needed medical interventions.

Lily Karam is a native Palestinian who has lived in Southern California for almost 40 years.  She is a successful business woman, a long time humanitarian activist and President of the Palestine Children's Relief Fund.  Lulu Emery, a retired registered nurse earned her nursing degree from the Jordan College of Nursing in Amman, Jordan where she later served as nursing instructor.  In 1999 she participated in a medical fact finding mission to Iraq, visiting various hospitals and schools.  She is a Board member of The Palestine Children's Relief Fund.

Global Exchange, Ventura County Supporters, are pleased to present a talk by Kazem Alamdari, Ph.D., California State University Northridge and Visiting Scholar at UCLA. This presentation will examine the changes in the power structure in Iran, beginning with the Ayatollah Khomeini, as an obstacle to U.S.-Iranian reconciliation. Kazem Alamdari received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, and his B. S. in Psychology from the University of Tehran. He has taught at various universities, including UCLA, Cal State University Los Angeles, and Cal State University Northridge. Currently he is a visiting scholar at the Department of Sociology, UCLA. Alamdari has published four books and numerous articles in English and Persian. He has presented lectures at national and international conferences in the United States, the former Soviet Union, Canada, Germany, Turkey, China, Japan and Brazil. A question and answer period will follow this presentation.

Guatemala is located in Central America and is populated by over 13 million people.  After its independence from Spain in 1821, it was ruled by a succession of dictators until 1944 when a coup led to a civilian, democratically elected government.  In 1954, the CIA led the overthrow of this government.  From 1960-1996 Guatemala became caught up in bloody civil wars and genocides as did other countries in Central America.  Since the mid 1990's Guatemala has become a representative democracy.

Stephen Stratton  is head of Collections and Technical Services at the John Spoor Broome
Library, Cal State University Channel Islands, where he leads the library forward into the future of digital books and journals.  Mr. Stratton will talk about his experiences in Guatemala working with two Non Governmental Organizations focusing on libraries, literacy and education.

Global Exchange, Ventura County Supporters, are pleased to present a talk by Mohy Abdelgany, CEO and Director of Newport Media, Inc. in Orange County. This presentation will review the timeline and major events that have taken place during the past two years in Egypt. Mr. Abdelgany plans to introduce some of the key players and analyze the current dynamics in this critical area. Finally our speaker plans an overview of United States policy and interests in Egypt and the region.

A native of Egypt, Mr. Abdelgany earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering there. After moving to the United States, he earned his Master of Science degree and proceeded to a long and distinguished career in business, engineering and marketing. With twenty two years of experience in the wireless semiconductor industry, he holds several U.S. patents in the field. Mr. Abdelgany is a frequent speaker in Orange County and we are pleased to welcome him to Ventura County for this event. A question and answer period will follow this presentation.

“5 Broken Cameras,” 2012 Academy Award Finalist Film for Best Documentary Feature will be shown on Monday, March 18, 2013 from 7pm-8:30pm, at the Thousand Oaks Library, 1401 E. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks.
Global Exchange, Ventura County Supporters are pleased to present the documentary film “5 Broken Cameras” at our monthly presentation at the Thousand Oaks Library. The film is a first-hand account by Palestinian farmer Emad Burnat of the first five years in the life of his youngest son, born in 2005, and the events taking place in his village of Bil’in in the West Bank. Burnat documents the nonviolent resistance of the villagers of Bil’in and other neighboring villages as the Israeli Wall and new settlements isolate the village from the land that they have farmed for generations.
“5 Broken Cameras” was co-directed by Palestinan Emad Burnat and Israeli Guy Davidi. In addition to being nominated for an Academy Award, this documentary won awards from the Jerusalem Film Festival, the Pusan International Film Festival and the Sundance Film Festival . The film is in Arabic and Hebrew, with English Sub-titles. The 90 minute film will start promptly at 7PM.
This program is free and open to the public. Please come early to get a seat.
We ask that no seats be held or reserved. If the room fills up, we will have to close the doors to comply with safety regulations of the library.

“NAFTA in 2013” will be the subject of a talk by Professor Jorge Garcia on Wednesday, February 20,  2013 from 7pm-8:30pm, at the  Thousand Oaks Library, 1401 E. Janss Road, Thousand Oaks.

The NAFTA agreements, signed in 1992, established a free-trade zone among the three North American countries:  Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.
Global Exchange is pleased to host speaker  Prof. Jorge Garcia, who will explore the effects of the NAFTA agreements in the years since implementation.  How have national economies been affected?  What has been the impact on labor and employment?  Has NAFTA affected changes in immigration patterns?  What changes might be in store for 2013 and the future?
Dr. Garcia is a Professor in the Department of Chicana/o Studies at California State University, Northridge, where he has served as Department Head and as Dean of the College of Humanities.

For the past 35 years Afghanistan has been in a state of war and internal conflict.   During the Soviet occupation, approximately 2 million Afghan people were killed. The continued internal conflict and the emergence of the Taliban further damaged self-esteem and human dignity.  The American occupation since  9/11 is scheduled to end in 2014. 
 
Global Exchange is pleased to host our speaker, Abdul Nasir Arghandehwal, who will present an overview of the history, traditions and current situation of Afghanistan .  He plans to share some of the stories that we do not hear in the media. 
 
Born in Kabul in 1963, Mr. Arghandehwal saw two of his brothers imprisoned and killed by the Communist Government.  After immigrating to the United States in 1982, our speaker earned his BS and MS Degrees in Electrical Engineering at California State University , Los Angeles . Afghandehwal sits on the Board of Afghan American Muslim Outreach, where he was President from 2009–2012.  He works as a Senior Engineer in Newbury Park and lives in West Hills with his wife and children.  
There will be a question and answer period immediately following the talk.
